HBCU Connections at Iowa State University

There is a rich, but largely unknown history of African Americans who used their Iowa State University education to create successful and impactful careers at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). HBCU Connections at Iowa State University begins the work of excavating and illuminating these stories, profiling African American alumni of Iowa State University who have served as faculty, staff, and administrators at HBCUs.

One goal of this project is to begin to bridge the gap between the Special Collections & University Archives department at Iowa State University and the Special Collections departments at the HBCUs represented in these profiles. Another goal of this project is to add representation of black students into our archives. They were here. They made a difference. They made history.

This is a living and breathing project. The expectation is that as more researchers uncover more information that fit the parameters, more people or more information can be added (with sources). The parameters are anyone who received a degree at Iowa State University between 1900-1950 and went on to a high-ranking and/or high-impact position at a historically black college or university (HBCU). To add more information, email: archives@iastate.edu.
