Kentucky State University was founded in 1886 in Frankfurt, Kentucky as the State Normal School for Colored Persons. It became a land-grant college in 1890. In 1902, its name changed to Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute for Colored Persons, in 1926 to Kentucky State Industrial College for Colored Persons and in 1938 to the Kentucky State College for Negroes. In 1952, the college dropped "for Negroes" from its name and it became Kentucky State University. In 1972, the college became Kentucky State University.
